WESTERN STATES GOLF TOURNAMENT
The 32nd Western States Golf Tournament was held in Tucson, AZ in November, 2005 with beautiful
weather, challenging golf courses, and great hosts. The organizing and hosting committee
consisted of Tom and Jeanne George, Ron and Barbara Moreland, Larry and Karen Lenz, Ken
and Connie Cookson, and Galen and Karen Bridge. The first night social was great, with an
evening barbecue at the Moreland’s. The final night festivities included a steak dinner
and an awards program at the Bridge’s. Ken Cookson took a group picture that will be
posted on the ARSCSE Website. Top golfers in the Men’s Division were Ken Cookson, Ron
Moreland, Larry Mills and Merlin Nelson. Top golfers in the Women’s Division were Jo
Mills, Barbara Moreland, Jennifer Ing and Betsy Klofstad.
Other golfers, spouses, and guests were: Gordon Klofstad, Roy and Dorothy Bright, Rod and
Sally Alt, Norm Priest, Warren and Barbara Lee, Van and Bernice Haderlie, Ron and Carolyn
Schultze, Brian Schultze, Tom and Naomi Wehri, Gary and Jayne Nordstrom, Linda Nelson,
Jerry and Phyllis Richard, Jim and Wilma Newman, Karl & Georgann Klingelhofer, Gordon &
Carol Odell and Chuck and Marcella Doud.
We enjoyed seeing the roadrunners, the many rabbits, and quail but the most interesting
encounter occurred at the Vistoso course on a par 3 on the back nine. The women’s group
behind us came zipping up in their golf carts to excitedly explain that they couldn’t tee
off because there was a large bobcat crouching on the tee box and it was in no mood to
leave. Gary Nordstrom immediately came to the rescue and the bobcat very reluctantly moved
after several tenacious stand-offs. Seems the cat was in the process of stalking a rabbit
and was not interested in anybody interrupting the hunt.
